Web Development

Here are a few examples of web design and development work I have done.

Tidepools Site

Live Version of Site

I was hired as an intern by MiraCosta College to create a online version of their yearly Art + Literature Journal titled "Tidepools". The scope of the project was large and vague -- the Media Arts department wanted to include non-print and non-tradtional submissions into the yearly program and wanted a website that could display not only the years writing and art pieces, but also music, video, and other media submissions. The site was created from a blank Wordpress template/theme called "Underscores". It utilized a lot of custom posts types and taxonomy types in order to be able to include all of the content desired for the site.

This project was challenging from both a development perspective as well as a design perspective. It was overseen by graphic design instructors as well as web development instructors so not only had to be well build, but also nicely designed. I also tried to incorporate design elements from this year's print version in order for it to be a companion piece to the print version.

The site has a lof of interesting functionality, like a bunch of custom queries and filtering, and is also expandable-- I built in the ability to create individual year mini-themes each year's submission archives that would be easy for a less experience developer to expand and skin. I also created lots of documentation for the incoming intern to follow in order to understand how the site works and how to manage both styling, development, and content.

Sub Attack Game

Live Version of Game

This game was programmed entirely in Javascript and uses the p5.js library. It was a project for a course on Programming for Interactivity and Animation and was a fun experience-- I had never really programmed a game before beyond an excersie making a pong game. I created the animated submarine asset myself in Adobe Illustrator and created the spritesheet in Photoshop, and then found other assets online for the sharks and music. The game is fun and challenging but possible to beat. Perhaps the toughest part was making sure the game was balanced and not too easy or difficult. Give it a try!

Artist Portfolio Site

Live Version of Site

This site was a class assignment based around the development of a custom Wordpress theme. We were instructed on how to build a Wordpress theme from a completely empty boilerplate template. The assignment also required styling the theme to the specifications of the client based on the responses from a questionnaire.

The goals of the assignment were to learn overall Wordpress theme structure, WP database management and plugin usage, PHP functions, and implementation into WP Themes, and making design decisions based on input from the client.

Responsive Electrician Business Site

Live Version of Site

This site was another class project, this time an exercise in creating a mobile-first, responsive site with some PHP elements (the class was focused on PHP and Wordpress). The students were provided with content comprised only of a few graphics and text files containing copy, with no other styling instruction.

I opted for a relatively safe design, as the project was business oriented. Some of the design elements are strange, such as random backgrounds and images on each page; this was intentionally done to meet the instructor's requirements in order to practice implementing PHP elements into the site.

iPoint Advisors Responsive Business Site

Live Version of Site

This site was a project requiring the development of another responsive, business oriented site. The instructor required the design to be determined by a questionnaire submitted by the client. I was also required to design the logo and overall branding for the company, including choosing the color palette.

I tried to give this site a very modern look, something that would suit the client's needs and would be an appropriate choice for a business seeking a static, informative web design solution.
